Lawmakers demand royalties

New legislation would compel pay-for-play

Call it pay-for-play, the legal version.

A bipartisan group of top lawmakers has introduced legislation that would compel broadcasters to pay performers when their music is played over the air.

Songwriters and publishers have long received royalties for airplay of their tunes, but performers have not.

"Aspiring performers, local musicians and well-known artists should be compensated for their music when it is played on the radio, both today and in the future," said Tod Donhauser, a spokesman for the Fairness in Radio Starting Today Coalition, in a statement. The bill would finally close the "corporate radio loophole," Donhauser added.

The National Assn. of Broadcasters has vehemently opposed paying a fee for performers, arguing that free airplay constitutes substantial free marketing and contributes significantly to sales. Musicians dispute that.

"The bottom line here is that radio plays music to attract listeners and bring in advertising dollars," said coalition founding member Tom Waits in a statement. "It's just plain wrong for radio to be allowed to build profitable businesses with growing revenues on the backs of artists and musicians without paying them fairly for it."

UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP (UMG) AND XM SATELLITE RADIO REACH AGREEMENT ON PIONEER INNO

New Agreement Settles Dispute and Covers All Receivers in the XM Product Line with Recording Functionality

New York, New York, Monday, December , 2007 -

Universal Music Group (UMG), the world’s leading music company, and XM Satellite Radio, the nation’s leading satellite radio company, today announced that they have resolved the lawsuit brought by UMG against XM over its Pioneer Inno, a portable satellite receiver with advanced recording functionality. The companies did not disclose terms of the deal.

As part of the agreement, UMG becomes the first music company to reach a multi-year deal covering all XM radios with advanced recording functionality, including both those currently available as well as future product releases. In addition, UMG will withdraw as a party to the complaint filed by the major record companies against XM in May, 2006.

“We are pleased to have resolved this situation in an amicable manner,” stated Doug Morris, Chairman & CEO, Universal Music Group. “We pride ourselves on empowering new technology and expanding consumer choice. And XM is providing a new and exciting opportunity for music lovers around the world to discover and enjoy our content, while at the same time recognizing the intrinsic value of music to their business and the need to respect the rights of content owners.”

“Our agreement is a win for everyone involved, especially for consumers,” said Nate Davis, President and CEO, XM Satellite Radio. “Today’s announcement underscores the fact that XM competes in an audio entertainment market in which consumers have more options than ever. We commend UMG for being the first music company to take this step forward with us and look forward to continuing our discussions with our other partners in the music industry.”

Electrelane take a contagious, unabashed pleasure in their search for pop ecstasy" - Wire

Following on from an incredibly busy year, Electrelane release 'In Berlin,' the mesmerizing album track that perfectly epitomizes how Electrelane's signature edge and atmosphere, and Verity's now ethereal vocals, can be chanelled into a work of pure melodic and gentle beauty. B-side 'Sea of Edge' is a brand new semi-instrumental track where the searing harmonies spiral alongside the music in an hypnotic journey where once again Electrelane's skilled musicianship and ability to create otherworldly sound-scapes is triumphantly highlighted.

About Too Pure

'The Sausage Machine', a regular gig promoted at Hampstead's White Horse by label co-founder Paul Cox was to prove to be the foundation for too pure. Spurred on by Richard Roberts - a 'Sausage Machine' regular - the compilation, 'Live at the Sausage Machine', marked the label's first foray into the world of releasing records.

Subsequent releases, from the raw confessionals of PJ Harvey and the proto-grunge of Th' Faith Healers to the avant-pop of Stereolab and Mouse on Mars, placed too pure at the heart of a revitalised indie scene, earning them a sympathetic audience and much respect along the way.

Fast forward to 2006 and too pure are still beating a path for incredible and adventurous new music. Electrelane, mclusky, Monade, Scout Nibett, The Rogers Sisters and Tracy + The PlasticsThe Organ, Shooting At Unarmed Men and Young People having recently signed to the label and Stereolab returning to the label after a decade away, too pure have an even brighter future to look forward to.

Hanson to leave EMI Music

By GORDON MASSON

Ian Hanson has ankled as chief operating officer of EMI Music, less than a year after he was promoted to the role.

Hanson's operational responsibilities will be assumed on an interim basis by Mike Clasper, who joined the EMI investor board last month and who has been reviewing the development of EMI's manufacturing, logistics and sales operations.

"With his experience of running international businesses at a very senior level, Mike will ably support the EMI recorded music business," said EMI Group chairman Guy Hands, who has been critical of the way that senior management ran EMI before his investment outfit Terra Firma bought the company earlier this year.

Iron Maiden stick with EMI

LONDON, 11th December, 2007 - EMI and Iron Maiden today announced they have renewed and extended their historic 28-year recording relationship in a deal for the world, excluding the USA, which also includes other revenues such as touring, merchandise and sponsorship.

Signed to EMI Records in November 1979, Iron Maiden quickly became one of the biggest rock bands in the world and have gone on to sell some 70 million albums including three No 1 and 15 Top 10 albums in the UK alone.

A Matter of Life and Death, Iron Maiden’s 14th and most recent studio album released in 2006, charted at No 1 in 10 countries, achieved Top 10 positions in 30 more and was Billboard magazine’s No 1 International Album.

Iron Maiden and EMI have a 28-year recording relationship. Since then, the band has since gone on to sell roughly 70 million albums, says EMI, including three No. 1 albums in the United Kingdom.
And as the group prepares to embark on an extensive world tour, its management team says the timing was perfect to renew ties with EMI and bring the music major into other aspects of its empire.

"For a band with a global following like Maiden, who rely on fan word of mouth, touring and marketing/sales expertise as they receive little or no radio or TV support, it is key that the 100% support and implementation of our visual marketing campaigns internationally is both effective and enthusiastic. EMI and their worldwide affiliates have always fulfilled this," comments manager Rod Smallwood.

Members of Las Vegas four-piece Panic! At The Disco are taking a stripped-down approach to their as-yet-untitled sophomore album, due March 25 via Decaydance/Fueled by Ramen, relying less on computer software and more on their abilities as musicians, says Panic! guitarist/lyricist Ryan Ross. "We just wanted the record to sound like four people playing a song," Ross tells Billboard.com. "A lot of the songs are definitely more geared toward playing live; we didn't think about that on the last record."

Imeem beams right at Universal

Networking site uploads UMG's services

Social-networking site Imeem has connected with all four major music distributors, sealing a deal Monday with Universal Music Group to provide music and video footage.

Warner Music, EMI and Sony BMG have already signed agreements with Imeem, which offers users streamed audio and video content free of charge, with payments to the record companies generated by advertising.

"Imeem has developed an innovative way to make our artists' music a central part of the social-networking experience," UMG chairman-CEO Doug Morris said in a statement.

Imeem's business model allows artists, labels, studios and media companies to make their music and video freely available for interactive streaming to the Imeem community while taking a share of the ad revenue.
