Strange Fruit Project was recently listed on the top 10 most downloaded on iTunes. [Listen to mp3 clips: "You a Grown Man Now," Colossus feat. Hylton Smythe "The Healing" sampler, Strange Fruit Project "Heroes in the City of Dope" sampler, Zion I & The Grouch]
Recently, however, the label has branched out into urban music, forming a subsidiary, Om Hip-Hop, that has not only bucked the trend toward mindless, mainstream-oriented rap, but also revitalized the notion of the album in a genre typically distinguished by singles.
Most interestingly, Om has done it with some truly left-field thinking, using the label's reputation to establish little-known but supremely talented artists who have quickly become major players in the alternative hip-hop field, due to their high degree of musicality and originality. Following the 2005 release of Colossus' "West Oaktown," an album that reintroduced a jazz sensibility to hip-hop, Om recently released Strange Fruit Project's "The Healing."
The album has already garnered some of the strongest reviews in the label's history and lodged in the top 10 on the iTunes charts -- a significant accomplishment for any label, let alone an indie mainly known for four-on-the-floor anthems and ambient chill-out jams.
Although Om is mainly seen as an electronic music tastemaker, hip-hop has always been a part of the label's vision, according to Marketing Vice President Gunnar Hissim, 31, and Om Hip-Hop A&R Jonathan McDonald, 25.

LABEL: UNIVERSAL MOTOWN/UNIVERSAL REPUBLIC RECORDS
ARTIST:JOJO
The High Road In Stores
DATE:10/17
Teenage pop sensation JoJo returns with THE HIGH ROAD, her second album. As adulthood beckons, JoJo stands strong and comes through with a release that shows her pop smarts aren't limited to appealing to the "tween" set. She's got a knack for hooks, a knockout voice and beats from Scott Storch and Timbaland. What more do you want? A sample of Toto's 1982 hit "Africa"? Well, she's got that too.

October is good month – the weather is cooling down, the air smellslike pumpkin pie, and Halloween is just around the corner.
TMG also has some quality releases coming out this month: DenisonWitmer’s Safe Away, Copeland’s Eat, Sleep, Repeat. And if you’re more of a live show kind of gal/guy, plenty of falltours are beginning. The Copeland/The Appleseed Cast tour is intense,as is the Lovedrug/Brandtson tour. And of course you can’t leaveBrandtson’s “Text on the Dance Floor” tour out of the equation withWheatus and Mêlée.
BUT, the greatest thing about this month is the fact that we’vechanged our office policy. From here on out, we are going to offer afree download on all of our artists Myspace pages. We already havetwo free downloads up at the TMG Myspace

This year, instead of hitting up the town and robbing 10-year-olds oftheir candy collection, just go to your local record store and buyCopeland’s Eat, Sleep, Repeat. Pagan’s debut record, Oh Musica, was recorded by Chase and histalented friends, like Gretta Cohn(ex-Cursive), during live sessionsin Memphis and just outside of NY using almost all acousticinstruments. ‘Oh Musica’ will be released in Spring 2007. There's not a prog DJ out there who doesn't own at least one or more 12 inches released on Hooj Choons. In progressive's heyday the label was responsible for some of the genre's finest moments such as Space Manoeuvres 'Stage One', Pete Lazonby 'Sacred Cycles' and Lustral 'Everytime'. Its iconic logo of a stick figure DJ spinning on two decks was regularly seen jutting out of record crates.
Hooj was one of the victims of the slump in UK clubland a few years ago, eventually shutting up shop in September 2003. But good news for fans of the label -- it's firing up again in early 2007. Before they release any vinyl, however, Hooj are releasing new remixes and unreleased versions of back catalogue tracks on Beatport over the next six weeks with one release per week.
Appropriately, the first release is 'Resurrection' by Medway which originally came out in 1998, appearing on John Digweed's Global Underground Hong Kong compilation. This digital version will include a new ambient dub plus remixes by Chris & Kai and Delikate Imposters, which actually had a limited vinyl run on Release Grooves in November 2005.
Best start sending your demos to Hooj Choons now.

Emily Haines Cuts Solo Album (Spin.com)
Four years and four cities later, Metric's Emily Haines is finally (almost) ready to release her debut solo effort.
Emily Haines is an artist that defies labeling. Frontwoman for Metric, she is proud to release her debut solo album, Knives Don’t Have Your Back this fall on Last Gang Records. Written and recorded over the past four years in Los Angeles, Montreal, Toronto and New York, the record sites contributions from the likes of Scott Minor from Sparklehorse, Broken Social Scene’s Justin Peroff, Stars’ Evan Cranley and Metric’s Jimmy Shaw. A distinct contrast from Metric’s bold, danceable sound, Knives is an intimate and subtle collection of mellow, piano-driven tunes complimented by soft string and horn arrangements.

In Tiga’s words :
“For most of my life, the only two Danes I knew were: GREAT Danes, those big dogs… and that big Danish goalkeeper. Then I started Djing all over and meeting lots of Danes. One of them was Tomas Barford, a genius, who makes so much good music I have trouble keeping track. He's involved in WHOMADEWHO, he is TOMBOY, and he does more solo stuff as well. When I got a demo CD I freaked out and tried to sign all the tracks… and this first 12inch on Turbo is the fruit of my labour (or I guess HIS labour).”
4 tracks of magic, groovy house music. Moody, building trance-house. Chopped up funk-disco.
I could try, like an idiot, to write more things like : funk-filled-groove-injected-modern-post-disco-house-bombs.... Or things like “aphex-twin shares a drum machine with etienne de crecy in a 70'd era duplex in chicago”.
Or I could just tell you a story about how I was at a hotel gym in LA, minding my own business, playing these tracks on the “ghetto blaster”, trying to decide which ones I liked best...when in walks......MICHAEL DOUGLAS!!!!! ....and after “grooving” for a few minutes tells me “this music is great, man”.
Don't trust me....trust Michael Douglas: movie-star, oscar winner and SEX addict.....he LOVES Tomas Barford.
Love
