L.A. Times editor O'Shea ousted

Departure follows that of Dean Baquet

The L.A. Times newsroom was hoping for a honeymoon period under new Tribune Co. owner Sam Zell after two years of management turmoil, but word spread Sunday that editor James O'Shea had been fired after refusing to implement $4 million in budget cuts.

O'Shea, a 28-year Tribune veteran, was fired following a confrontation earlier this month with publisher David Hiller, the Los Angeles Times reported on its website Sunday. O'Shea's departure was expected to be announced this week, but the news broke Sunday on the Wall Street Journal's website.

L.A. Times spokeswoman Nancy Sullivan declined to comment on the matter, while a Tribune spokesman referred calls to Sullivan. The Times reported that O'Shea's dispute with Hiller over the order to slice $4 million out of the newsroom's $120 million budget came to a head on Jan. 7.

O'Shea's departure comes just a month after Chicago-based Tribune was taken private in a complex $8.2 billion employee-ownership deal led by real estate magnate Zell.

Three Rooms (ok, one is a big pool and a hot tub) of magic from 9pm till about 5am in Old Street.

We're keeping this one a little bit more intimate (there's only 500 presale tix) than the massive Party of The Year which even made the News of The World.

And we know that a lot of you are probably broke from Xmas and New Years so we're also keeping it cheap.

Plus the guys from Fly 53 are also going to be giving away some clothes from their new range. See, we even make sure you keep warm.

But the lineup is huge and is littered with acts that we know are going to make an impact in 2008.

Anyway, we're not going to write about the new class of 2008. Go check out their myspace or lastfm pages and have a listen. They're all amazing.

NSDTCM:JACK JOHNSON
LABEL:BRUSHFIRE RECORDS

His previous albums (In Between Dreams, On and On and Brushfire Fairytales) included some of the great tracks of 2006 such as Better Together, Sitting, Waiting, Wishing and Good People. Jack was also involved in the Curious George film soundtrack which included the classic Upside Down.

Britain took to Jack in a big way. When he first ventured over the water in May 2005, it was as if he had lit the blue touch paper and run. The low-key shows in Shepherd’s Bush and Cornwall sold out in nine minutes, and the public and media reaction was incredible. When Jack returned to the UK in February 2006, he played sold-out arena shows and performed at the BRIT Awards – his UK TV debut - alongside Gorillaz, Coldplay and Kanye West. Jack’s night was capped when he won the award for International Breakthrough Act.

Jack has three passions in his life: music, surfing and his family, though not necessarily in that order. As music lovers everywhere have fallen head over heels for his unique, acoustic sound, it’s heartening to know that Jack’s music is a pure distillation of his own character.

Modest, warm-hearted and serene, Jack Johnson has found global success on his own terms, without hype or compromise.

Sleep Through The Static’ was recorded 100% on solar energy.

Brushfire Records is a Mango Tree, Hawaii based record label owned by singer-songwriter Jack Johnson. The label, formerly known as The Moonshine Conspiracy Records, was originally made to release soundtracks for Woodshed Films, a surfing movie production owned by Jack Johnson, Emmett Malloy, and Chris Malloy for Thicker than Water. It was after this that the three, with Jack Johnson's wife, Kim Johnson, decided to release albums along with soundtracks. The record company has put out the soundtrack for the Curious George movie Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George and Jack Johnson's In Between Dreams.

UMG releasing Stones soundtrack

Superstar band's EMI deal expires in May

The Rolling Stones are taking their soundtrack album for "Shine the Light" to Universal Music Group, building speculation that they will be the next superstar act to depart EMI for good.

Universal's Polydor label will release the soundtrack to Martin Scorsese's "Shine a Light" in March around the time Paramount Classics puts the pic in theaters. It will open the Berlin Film festival in early February.

Reports have come out of London that Mick Jagger has met with EMI's new owner Guy Hands about extending the Stones' deal with EMI, which expires in May. Taking the soundtrack to Universal puts them in the driver's seat to deal for future Stones recordings.

NSDTCM:BRIT AWARDS NOMINATIONS

The Academy is made up of 1000 specially invited members from different sectors of the music industry. Major and independent record companies, retailers, music critics and student press, music TV and Radio producers and presenters, music publishers, artist managers, concert promoters and venues, NUS representatives and DJs.

Less than a quarter of the academy’s membership is drawn from the recording industry, and despite the popular misconception that “BRIT Bosses” dish out the awards, only 12% of the voting academy are drawn from major record companies.

All academy votes are collected online, and are counted and verified by official scrutinisers ERS (Electoral Reform Services).

It’s not all about perving on bespectacled rockers however. There unifying factor among the hundreds of Academy members is that they’re all serious about music.

That’s not to say they all share the same tastes.

Our polls showed that they have a penchant for pop, with hotly-tipped BRITs potential awardees like Rihanna, Newton Faulkner, Mika and the Kaiser Chiefs showing up again and again as their top tips.

But among pop faves , we found some more eclectic musical interests among Academy Members. Dame Shirley Bassey, Groove Armada, grunge kids Sonic Youth, eclectic cellists Basquiat Strings and even bloke called Seasick Steve.

Academy members are reflective of the diverse tastes and opinions of the British public. And just like the rest of us, they’ve got their fair share of quirk.

XL Recordings is an independent record label which was launched by Tim Palmer, Nick Halkes and Richard Russell with Beggars Banquet Records in 1989 to release its rave and dance music.

Beginnings

Originally the label was an offshoot of Beggars' more commercial dance label called Citybeat which was known for records by acts such as Freeez , Starlight, Dream Frequency and the Ultramagnetic MCs. However with the success of acts such as The Prodigy and SL2, XL superseded Citybeat in the company's line up.

Palmer, who also owned the dance music store Groove Records on Londons Greek Street, initially employed Halkes and Russell (who as artists and DJ's were known as Kicks Like a MuleGreenwich Village, where he had met Palmer who was visiting the store.

During the early nineties, XL Recordings releases were dance orientated ranging from Belgium techno (T99- "Anasthasia") to Breakbeat hardcore (SL2 - "On A Ragga Tip") to Drum and BassEMI-owned commercial dance label Positiva, and subsequently his own independent commercial dance label Incentive. In 1994 Palmer left XL and retired from the music business, leaving Russell in sole charge of XL.

Russell broadened the musical horizons of the label whilst maintaining a credo of working with artists he saw as original and inventive [1]

In 2003 the label won the Music Week A&R award. [2]

Russell has been consistently named as one of the most influential figures in the UK music business [3] and was recently named by the Evening Standard as one of London's most influential people [4]

Roster

Since the late 1990s expanded into other genres such as freak-folk, alternative rock and hip-hop. They are now the home to an eclectic range of artists such as:

Recently

RJD2, who left Def Jux to join XL and will record future albums with XL. [5]

XL Recordings have also released classic albums from overseas artists such as Gotan Project and The Avalanches

Thom Yorke, of Radiohead fame, released his first solo record, The Eraser, on the label in July of 2006.

While not reaching Number One in any specific country (#2 in the US, #3 in the UK and #2 in Canada), it was Number One for worldwide sales during its initial week of release.

In October 2007, Radiohead completed negotiations to sign with XL for a proper studio release of their seventh studio album, In Rainbows.

Timberlake to star in Super Bowl ad

Artist to appear in spot for Pepsi

Come Super Bowl Sunday, Amazon.com will get a leg up in the digital music race it's running against Apple Inc.'s iTunes Store. And not just any leg: Justin Timberlake's leg.

The boy band heartthrob turned Grammy-winning R&B singer will appear in a spot for Pepsi, kicking off a yearlong $1 billion giveaway of MP3s, CDs, videos, consumer electronics and other items on Amazon.

Back in 2004, PepsiCo Inc. and Apple forged a similar partnership, which started with an iTunes Super Bowl commercial promoting legal music downloads, to the tune of Green Day's version of "I Fought the Law." The companies gave away 100 million free iTunes downloads that, with rising iPod sales, helped push Apple to the forefront of the digital music industry.

Working with Amazon this year is big deal for Pepsi, which said it will spend more on its "Pepsi Stuff" advertising campaign than on any past marketing effort.

EMI to pinkslip up to 1,800 staff

Hands tells staff of restructuring plans

One of the biggest shakeups in the music industry's history is expected to be announced today by EMI.

It is likely that 1,500-2,000 people will be pinkslipped, a slew of artists dropped and departments at individual labels centralized. EMI's key pop labels, Capitol, Virgin and Parlophone, are likely to retain only their individual A&R responsibilities as sales, marketing and administration staffs are merged into a single entity.

A number of EMI offices are expected to close, and it's possible several of the company's smaller imprints will shutter. Speculation is that the profitable music publishing unit and A&R departments will be left largely untouched.

The company is looking to shed annual costs of nearly $400 million, a figure in line with the amount targeted by Edgar Bronfman Jr. when he took over Warner Music Group in 2003. Warner Music staff is now down to about 4,000.

Guy Hands, chief of EMI's new owners, Terra Firma Capital Partners, will deliver a presentation to EMI staff today at the Odeon Cinema in the Kensington section of London.

Live Nation writing its own ticket

Concert promoter keys on sponsorships, resale

Live Nation is forecasting a $25 million increase in EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization) once it installs its own ticketing system, and the concert promoter calculates that through sponsorships that figure will double.

The truly uncharted territory, however, is the secondary market, in which Live Nation expects to become an active participant. Once its ticketing system goes online in 2009, the company will essentially be in line to profit from the initial sale of a ticket and then from its resale.

“The fundamental strategy is that we need to control our tickets, control the allocation,” Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino said in a conference call Friday with analysts and investors. “To date, we don’t have a lot of flexibility.”

Live Nation struck a deal last month with the German ticket company CTS to create an inhouse ticketing service that would replace the promoter’s deal with Ticketmaster, which expires at the end of the year.
