Managers try to rein in ticket market

Music business wants its cut

By Gordon Masson

Reps of more than 400 performing artists, including Robbie Williams, KT Tunstall and Radiohead, have banded together to create the Resale Rights Society, which aims to license the unregulated secondary ticketing market.

Initiative was launched Tuesday in London by the Music Managers Forum.

The Resale Rights Society aims to ensure music fans are protected from unscrupulous or bogus resellers by introducing a scheme to validate sales on ticketing sites. It also wants to ensure that artists and the live music industry share in the proceeds of resold tickets. It will approach websites including eBay, Viagogo, Seat Exchange, Seatwave and GetMeIn.

“The secondary ticketing market offers benefits to music fans and the live music industry alike. It does not make sense to criminalize it,” said Resale Rights Society chairman-elect Marc Marot, manager of Yusuf Islam and Paul Oakenfold, and former chief executive of Island Records. “But there are real issues of consumer protection here, and it is unacceptable that not a penny of the estimated £200 million ($413 million) in transactions generated by the resale of concert tickets in the U.K. is returned to the investors in the live music industry. Where this trade is fair to consumers, we propose to authorize it by agreeing to a levy on all transactions.

“The online ticketing exchanges have consistently claimed that they wish to work with artists and the live music industry. This society presents them with that opportunity.”

The initiative comes in response to four U.K. government summits on secondary ticketing.

A Dept. of Culture, Media and Sport select committee, chaired by John Whittingdale, is expected to announce the results of its inquiry within days.

Jazz Summers, chairman of the Music Managers Forum and manager of the Verve, said, “The industry needs to stand together and ensure that our artists and the fans are not exploited by operators of online ticket exchanges.”

LABEL:SYCO MUSIC / SONY BMG UK

Leona Lewis Still Strong On U.K. Charts

Leona Lewis maintained her stronghold on the U.K. sales charts yesterday (Dec. 2) as her Syco Music/Sony BMG album "Spirit" started a third week at No. 1 and "Bleeding Love" strode into a sixth week atop the singles survey.

Simon Cowell's Syco Music achieved a notable double at the top of the album chart, where Lewis' predecessor as a winner on "The X-Factor," 2005 champion Shayne Ward, debuted at No. 2 with his sophomore album "Breathless."

Its current title track single fell 6-8. Cowell's personal stranglehold on the current top three of the album list was completed by Westlife, on his other imprint, S, who slipped 2-3 with "Back Home," as the single "Home" moved back up 12-10.

"TIMES HAVE CHANGED AND I AM STANDING AT AN EXCITING
CROSSROADS WITH RED FLOOR RECORDS.

This label was created for the purpose of making my music directly available
to my listeners without the run to the record store. I love record stores
of course, we all do, but it's a fast world and we embrace
the idea of people having access to music via the internet. My friend
Adam Samuels, whom I've worked with for years, has enthusiastically
offered to run the Red Floor operation. In fact, he suggested that we
make our music available in full resolution at no extra charge.
We may be the first site to offer high quality music downloads.
The usual MP3 resolution is also available.
We are advocators of high quality in our music making
and also in our downloading.

Our first new project available on the site is 'Here is What is'.
This music is a direct soundtrack representation of the music
that exists in our feature length documentary film
also titled 'Here is What is'. For those of you who might not know,
the film is a camera following me around over the course
of a year, in and out of recording studios documenting once and for all
the way it really happens. We start in Toronto and end in Morocco.
The film will be showing in select cities and the dvd will be available soon.
We thought it would be nice to make the music part of this project
available for the Christmas stocking. Although March 18th is our proposed
street date, the music will be available exclusively on this site until then.

We are a small, dedicated team consisting of myself, Adam Samuels,
Adam Vollick, and Margaret Marissen, and we're very excited about this
new frontier. The Red Floor Records site will allow us to quickly
make something available to you that we are excited about.
Imagine this... I get up in the night and create a piece of music,
as I often do, and the next morning we put it up on the site
and make it available to all. We're only human and isn't
it nice to serve something while it's hot. What I love about all
of this is that I get to be a part of the site and let you in on
something that is significant to me, a newsletter with substance.

We have many ideas ranging from more music,
to clips of live performances, and perhaps even a regular
half hour episode of visuals and music relating to my travels.
Maybe even philosophical exchanges with friends and travelers.
We hope you'll enjoy it."
