Mercury Records is a record label currently headquartered in the UK, and is a subsidiary of Universal Music Group. In the US, its name and logo were only used on its back catalogue, country releases, and re-issues, until recently.

Jay-Z leaves post as Def Jam topper

Artist will continue recording for label

Shawn Carter, the rapper known as Jay-Z, will ankle his position as president of Def Jam Records at the end of the year.

He has been president of the Universal Music Group-owned label since the beginning of 2005.

Carter, whose contract expires at the end of the year, will continue recording for Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam.

“Now it’s time for me to take on new challenges,” he said in a statement. “I am pleased to have had the opportunity to build upon the Def Jam legacy.”

There has been no announcement of a replacement or even if there will be one.
