NEWS:Sony BMG Drops All DRM

Business Week is reporting
and our sources confirm that
Sony BMG will offer at least part of its catalog available
DRM free in the first quarter of the year making it the last and final major label group to drop copy restrictions on downloads.

A broad "experiment" is in the final planning stages, but details of some of Sony BMG's efforts are already emerging.

Justin Timberlake, who records for Sony's Jive and other artists from the merged label group will be participating in a Super Bowl promotion with Pepsi on Feb. 3 as part of a free distribution of 1 billion songs through Amazon's popular DRM-free download service.

Sony has already been experimenting with DRM-free song giveaways for developing artists for the last six months. "A lot of these tests have led people to believe that maybe this works," said a Sony BMG executive who asked not to be identified.

Album sales take a tumble in 2007

Digital growth on the rise by 45%

BY PHIL GALLO

The digital growth in downloaded songs and albums hit record levels in 2007, but it wasn't enough to make up for the loss in physical CD sales.

Sales in the U.S. of all albums, digital and physical, dropped 15% to 500.5 million from the 588.2 million sold in 2006.

Last year was the seventh consecutive in which music sales have dipped; the last rise was in 2000, when album sales hit 800 million.

Meanwhile, digital track sales rose 45% to 844.2 million in '07 while digital album sales climbed 53% to 50 million, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

Digital sales now represent 10% of all albums sold, nearly double the 5.5% they represented in 2006.

When track-equivalent albums -- 10 songs equals one album -- are added to the equation, sales hit 584.9 million, down 9.5% from 646.4 million in 2006.

Growth in digital album sales came in both current and catalog departments. Current was up 46% to 27.1 million; catalog rose 64% to 22.9 million. Deep catalog was up 63% to 16 million.

The top-selling digital album was Maroon 5's "It Won't Be Soon Before Long," with 252,000 downloads purchased.

FRESH NEW TALENT FOR 2008 !!!

LOSTHIGHWAY INTRODUCE

RYAN BINGHAM

"A series of torn pages, broken people and those just holding their breath hoping to get out alive... Compelling listening" - AmericanSongwriter.com

Lost Highway release the label debut album from Texas singer-songwriter Ryan Bingham.

Released in the US and already receiving radio play in the UK from the likes of Johnnie Walker and Bob Harris on Radio 2, the critically acclaimed CD contains 14 self-penned songs and follows in the tradition of great Texas songwriters.

Mescalito was produced by former Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford, who also plays on the album. Bingham's music, as well as his live performances have already made fans of acclaimed artists such as Patty Griffin and Texas legends Joe Ely and Terry Allen.

At 25, the bumpy course of Bingham's life has already surpassed that of many twice his age. From his bordertown upbringing to his years on the Southwestern rodeo circuit, Bingham's poignant songs, sung through his whiskey-soaked voice, reflect his experiences and the wisdom he has gained from them. His songs are raw, honest and born out of a genuine soul.

From the opening track "Southside of Heaven" to the bluesy slide of "Bread & Water" to the Mexican-flavoured "Boracho Station", Bingham's songs come straight from the heart. His influences blend seamlessly with his own style creating a traditional sound that also sounds fresh and original.

RYAN BINGHAM- LIVE IN THE UK

Ryan brings his captivating live show to the UK this month. Don't miss out on the chance to see him play at two intimate venues:

January 13th - King Tuts,
Glasgow
January 14th - Borderline, London

During his trip to the UK, Ryan will be recording live sessions for Bob Harris' (Radio 2 show) and Bryan Burnett (BBC Radio Scotland). These will be aired during the week of 14th January.

BLOG REVIEW:SUNBURN FESTIVAL

2008 is being welcomed in with a mighty cold blast here in the UK, which is of course one reason why our DJs love to play the big festivals that happen at this time of year in Australia and other suitably summery parts of the world.

Goa has a long tradition as a New Year’s hangout, with its history of wild trance parties on the beach.

And at the weekend it saw India’s first ever major 2-day electronic music event in the shape of the Sunburn Festival. (We previewed the appearance of Above & Beyond hosting their own Anjunabeach stage there a while back).

Obviously this sponsored event, put on by MTV India star Nikhil with a whole host of top notch international guests is a big step for electronic music in India.

The party was aimed at an enthusiastic Indian audience who seem to be really getting into dance music these days so it was an important milestone.

ABOUT PUMP AUDIO

Founded in 2001, Pump Audio is a new kind of agent for independent musicians, digitally connecting them with buyers in the mainstream media. With Pump Audio, artists can license their music into productions without giving up any ownership, while TV and advertising producers can discover new music ready for use.

With a growing catalog of tens of thousands of songs, all by independent artists from around the world, customers access music through Pump's innovative search software and delivery services, the Soundtrack Service online, and the PumpBox™, which is currently on the desktops of thousands of creative professionals worldwide.

Pump Audio is based in New York's Hudson Valley

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Having spent the 90's trying to make a living from music, and having gone through both independent and major labels, The Simpletons had run their course. Steve Ellis was the songwriter, Rob Tourtelot was the guitar player, Steve Askew was the producer and Bob Opatrny was the attorney. Time to find a way to pay the bills....

Chance meetings and the licensing of a Simpletons song into a commercial brought along an idea.

There's a lot of great indie music out there, and there's a lot of TV. Perhaps there's a way to make a living without having to wait around for salvation from labels. Perhaps there's a market that doesn't care if you are young or old, handsome or not.

Perhaps there's a market that just needs a lot of good music, in every style, all the time—a market that pays to use that music.

How about a company that succeeds and grows along with its artists? If we get results, you get results. If we don't, you lose nothing and we gain nothing. No promises—just a hard-working approach to developing a real marketplace.

The Pump system for artists was designed so that we as artists would agree to be part of it. The Pump service for customers is designed so that producers can access great independent music quickly and easily.

Pump Audio was created to develop a market that didn't exist before, and that's what we've done.

We license more independent music to production than anyone else we know of. And we give our clients what they need—real music, by real artists. It's a real business that's growing fast.

Jonas Brothers sign $120 million-touring deal

Tween rockers will play more than 140 arena dates for Live Nation

LOS ANGELES - Concert touring company Live Nation on Thursday said it reached a two-year, multimillion dollar, worldwide touring deal with tween rockers Jonas Brothers.

Live Nation caused a stir in October when it lured pop star Madonna from her long-term music label Warner Brothers with an estimated $120 million multi-album, touring and merchandising global partnership.

The Los Angeles-based company said the deal calls for the band, comprised of three siblings from New Jersey, to play more than 140 theatres and arenas around the world.
